If you’ve never been to the Lower Town Arts & Music Festival (LTAMF) in Paducah, you’re in for a treat. This annual spring celebration brings together artists from across the region with local, regional, and national music acts in Paducah’s historic Lower Town neighborhood. Run by the nonprofit organization Friends of Lower Town Arts & Music Festival, the event is free, easy to access, and full of the kind of authentic community spirit that makes you feel like you’re part of something special.

LTAMF began in 1981 under the organization of the Lower Town Neighborhood Association. The Association, which was responsible for renovating and preserving buildings in the neighborhood, started the “Lower Town Fair” as a way to show the community that this historic section of Paducah was safe and welcoming.
Several years later, the City of Paducah expanded on their mission by launching the Artist Relocation Program, which brought artists from across the nation to renovate and repopulate Lower Town. Since then, the festival has survived and thrived under the direction of several local artists and nonprofits dedicated to preserving this important part of Paducah’s cultural heritage.

LTAMF has put a spotlight on another key piece of Paducah’s identity: its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts & Folk Art. As one of only 10 UNESCO Creative Cities in the United States, Paducah – like the festival – is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of local art and culture. With key support from Yeiser Art Center, musical groups from two UNESCO Creative Cities of Music – Kansas City, MO and Ambon, Indonesia – have taken the Lower Town stage in recent years.

This year, the Paducah Convention & Visitors Bureau is collaborating with Grammy winner Louis Michot of Lost Bayou Ramblers to represent the newest UNESCO Creative City in the United States, New Orleans, LA. Michot celebrates and preserves French Cajun and Creole heritage through his music, which is primarily performed on fiddle. He will participate in multiple free community events before performing Friday night in Lower Town.
Grammy Winner Robert Randolph headlines the festival this year, with acts like Aaron Lee Tasjan, Girl Tones, Slap Dragon, and Bawn in the Mash rounding out the schedule. Plus, artist booths filled with jewelry, ceramics, prints, paintings, and lots more will be open and ready for exploration.
Looking for more community touch points? The Paducah Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is presenting a brand-new pre-festival concert on May 7th. Titled Crossroads of Sound, the concert brings together classical and bluegrass traditions in a dynamic musical experience designed to appeal to symphony audiences and folk music fans alike. PSO will team up with local artists The Wheelhouse Rousters, Bawn in the Mash, and acclaimed singer-songwriter SG Goodman for the performance, featuring original arrangements by Emmy Award-winning composer Mark Evitts, a Paducah native.
