Paducah, Kentucky: The 1857, a new boutique hotel, has opened downtown, reviving an antebellum building that was built in—you guessed it—1857 and once housed a gentlemen’s haberdashery and turn-of-the-century tractor repair shop. (The repair shop is now a bar and event space.) Interiors are minimalist and industrial, with lots of exposed brick and the huge windows you would expect to see in an old factory. With only 10 guest rooms, The 1857 made each one unique, using original architecture to set off spare, modern decor. Only one block off main-drag Broadway, the hotel is also just a block from Freight House, Paducah’s highly touted new farm-to-table restaurant, housed in the1920s-era Paducah Freight Depot. The restaurant was launched in October of last year by native chef Sara Bradley, who was born and raised in western Kentucky. After working with chef John Fraser at Dovetail in New York and chefs David Posey and Paul Kahan at Blackbird in Chicago, Bradley returned to her roots, offering a seasonal menu with farm-fresh, locally sourced ingredients—which Bradley defines as within a day’s drive of her restaurant. Among the Freight House craft cocktails that capitalize on Kentucky’s bourbon culture is the Pistol Avenue: cinnamon bourbon, Fernet-Branca, and tamarind nectar.
