8th of August (Marker Number: 1957) County: McCracken Location: Paducah, Community Center, 505 S. 8th St. Traditionally on August 8, African Americans assemble in Paducah to celebrate freedom and pay tribute to their roots. They gather annually for dances, ballgames, and picnics, as a family occasion and in a spirit of community remembrance. In some years people have come from as far away as St. Louis, Memphis, and Chicago.
