West Kentucky Community and Technical College’s One Book Read Committee is pleased to announce the 2018-2019 One Book Read: Water Street, by Crystal Wilkinson.
Water Street was named a finalist for both the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. This collection of short stories reads like a novel, and features interwoven stories and characters who live in a small Kentucky town on Water
Street. On Water Street, every person has at least two stories to tell - one story that the light of day shines on, and the other that lives only in the pitch black of night, the kind of story that a person carries beneath their breastbones for safekeeping.
Nationally renowned author Crystal Wilkinson is a native Kentuckian who lives, writes, and even opened her own business within the Commonwealth. She is a distinguished African American Kentucky author who describes herself as a “country girl” who grew up in rural Indian Creek, Kentucky, and is familiar with its knobs, hills, and hollers. She won the 2016 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence for her novel, The Birds of Opulence, and the 2002 Chaffin Award for Appalachian Literature for her short story collection, Blackberries, Blackberries.
